ILEARN – Innovative Learning Environment for Refugee Adult Language Needs

Dråpen i Havet is collaborating with ELIX, the University of Bergen, and Second Chance School Kalamata to develop training modules and approaches tailored for educators and organizations working in adult refugee education.

The goal of ILEARN is to enhance the quality of education, both internally and externally, by implementing modern methods and approaches. The project is supported through the ERASMUS+ Small-Scale Partnerships program.

Why do we collaborate?

Through the ILEARN project, we bring together experience and expertise from academic institutions, volunteer organizations, and lifelong learning schools in Norway and Greece. By working together, we develop valuable knowledge that benefits not only our organizations but also serves as a resource for others working in refugee education across Europe.

How is the project organised?

The project is divided into four key components:

  • Project management
Dråpen i Havet serves as the project lead, overseeing administration, coordination, and reporting. Together with ELIX, we will ensure effective monitoring, evaluation, accountability, and learning (MEAL) to guarantee that project outcomes are both relevant and valuable for partner organizations and beyond.
  • Design and Development of Training Modules
All partners will collaborate on the project’s design and the development of training modules. With its strong background in education and training, ELIX will take the lead in this phase, organizing content for meetings, workshops, and workflows, as well as designing and structuring the training modules. Alongside A Drop in the Ocean, ELIX will ensure the timely delivery of both in-person and online milestones. The University of Bergen will contribute by shaping specific modules with defined learning outcomes and providing recommendations on best practices. Second Chance School Kalamata will bring practical expertise, supporting the development and adaptation of training modules and offering insights into implementation in Greece.
  • Training and Capacity Building
The Training component will deliver thematic sessions in key areas: Culture & Gender, Integration & Empowerment, Teacher Curricula & Pedagogy, and Connection to Formal Education. The goal is to ensure that all learning outcomes, curricula, and assessments are met, shared, and sustained for long-term impact. Training sessions will be conducted both in-person and online, led by partner educators with support from associate partners at each location.
  • Workshop, Documentation and Future Development
The final component, Workshop, Documentation, Report & Future, will be a collaborative effort. The documentation of the entire project—including training modules, curricula, and surveys—along with reflections, will begin in November 2025 and be finalized by December 2025. This process will facilitate internal knowledge-sharing and strategic capacity-building for partners in adult refugee education while also ensuring external dissemination of the training materials for use by other stakeholders.

We are excited to embark on this collaboration and contribute to strengthening the quality of adult refugee education through the ILEARN project. Together, we aim to create a valuable resource that will benefit educators and learners far beyond our own organizations.
